Teatre del Raval in Gandia is an independent performing arts venue housed in a former workshop in the Raval neighbourhood. Its programme brings together theatre, music, family productions, school campaigns and projects connecting culture with sustainability.

The venue’s size creates a close relationship between performers and audiences. For visitors to Gandia, it offers a way to discover the city’s creative scene in a distinctive space near the Centre Històric, away from the scale of a large auditorium.
From furniture workshop to theatre
Teatre del Raval began with Pluja Teatre, a Gandia-based company looking for a permanent home in which to rehearse, build sets and stage its productions. In 1985, it bought a former furniture workshop and warehouse on Carrer Sant Ramon and began adapting it for the performing arts.
The venue started operating in the mid-1980s, while a refurbishment completed in 1995 established the building as a permanent theatre with a particular focus on children, young people and schools. The conversion retained the building’s unassuming character and gave a former industrial workplace a new cultural purpose.

The 2013 closure and community revival
Funding difficulties forced Pluja Teatre to suspend activity at the end of 2013. The closure threatened a venue that had formed part of the theatrical education of several generations of schoolchildren from Gandia and La Safor.
In 2014, the cultural collective LaCasaCalba took over management and launched a crowdfunding campaign to restore the venue. Its reopening preserved the performing arts programme and expanded the project into music, cultural mediation, training and artistic experimentation.
A venue designed for close-up performance
The main auditorium has approximately 200 seats. Its compact capacity shortens the distance to the stage and suits theatre, dance, concerts, film and family productions. The building also contains flexible spaces for workshops, rehearsals, training and small-scale projects.

Street-level access and the scale of the building strengthen its relationship with the neighbourhood. Visitors with specific accessibility requirements can confirm the arrangements for each activity directly with the theatre before purchasing a ticket.
School theatre, music and contemporary creation
Audience development remains central to the project. School campaigns introduce pupils from Gandia, La Safor and nearby areas to the performing arts, while the general programme combines professional companies, family productions and training activities.
Its in-house projects include HOSTES, a series devoted to singer-songwriters and musical ideas that rarely fit commercial circuits. Some performances have included attentive-listening activities designed to focus the experience on sound.

RRRR! Festival d’Art i Reciclatge connects live arts, sound experimentation and environmental education. Its programme changes with each edition, so current dates and activities should be checked through the official channels.
Culture and eco-rehabilitation
The building’s refurbishment has introduced energy-efficiency measures, material reuse and adaptable spaces. The process forms part of the theatre’s cultural outlook: the construction work also helps explain how a performing arts venue can reduce its environmental impact.
The connection between creativity and sustainability appears in workshops, installations and festivals. Visitors therefore encounter a building that preserves the memory of its industrial origins while adapting to new cultural uses.
