family settled in Valencian lands following the conquest of Valencia by James I. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Popes&nbsp;Calixtus III&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hotelborgia.com\/blog\/pope-alexander-vi-borgia\/\">Alexander VI<\/a>,&nbsp;Cesare&nbsp;and&nbsp;Lucrezia Borgia&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hotelborgia.com\/blog\/who-was-saint-francis-borgia\/\">Saint Francis Borgia<\/a>&nbsp;are the best-known members of \u201c<strong>The<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>House of Borgia<\/strong>\u201d, one of the most influential families of the Renaissance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From&nbsp;Canals&nbsp;and&nbsp;X\u00e1tiva, passing through Valencia, they reached&nbsp;Rome, later returning once again to Valencian lands to refound the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hotelborgia.com\/blog\/el-ducado-de-gandia-un-legado-historico-de-la-casa-de-borja\/\">Duchy of Gandia<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Route\"><\/span>The Route<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The route through the heritage of the Borgias starts in the city of&nbsp;Gandia&nbsp;and finishes in&nbsp;Valencia, visiting various Valencian monuments and towns where the Borgias left their mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_route_city_by_city\"><\/span>The route, city by city<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Gandia\"><\/span>Gandia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The Old University:<\/strong> founded by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hotelborgia.com\/blog\/who-was-saint-francis-borgia\/\" title=\"Who was Saint Francis Borgia?\">Francis Borgia<\/a>. Beside the building you will discover the five bronze sculptures representing the most famous members of the family (work by Manuel Boix) <\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hotelborgia.com\/blog\/collegiate-church-santa-maria-gandia\/\" title=\"Collegiate Church of Santa Mar\u00eda de Gandia\">The&nbsp;Collegiate Church of Santa Mar\u00eda de Gandia&nbsp;<\/a>:<\/strong> extended by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hotelborgia.com\/blog\/maria-enriquez-luna-regent-duchess-gandia\/\" title=\"Mar\u00eda Enr\u00edquez de Luna, Duchess Regent of Gandia\">Mar\u00eda Enr\u00edquez de Luna<\/a>, duchess regent of Gandia&nbsp;and daughter-in-law of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hotelborgia.com\/blog\/pope-alexander-vi-borgia\/\" title=\"Alexander VI, the Borgia pope\">Alexander VI<\/a>. <\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hotelborgia.com\/blog\/ducal-palace-borgia-gandia-history-visit\/\" title=\"Ducal Palace of the Borgias\">The Ducal Palace of Gandia<\/a>:&nbsp;<\/strong>Most of the Borgia dukes and all their descendants were born here.<\/li><li><strong>The&nbsp;Hospital of San Marcos<\/strong>: whose board of trustees was chaired by the Dukes of Gandia, today houses the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hotelborgia.com\/blog\/gandia-archaeological-museum-maga\/\" title=\"Archaeological Museum of Gandia MAGa\">Archaeological Museum of Gandia<\/a>.<\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hotelborgia.com\/blog\/museo-de-santa-clara-en-gandia\/\" title=\"Convent of Santa Clara in Gandia\">The Convent of Santa Clara<\/a>:<\/strong>  preserves an outstanding art collection bequeathed by the Borgias. It was a retreat convent for many women of the Borgia family.<\/li><li><strong>The Alquer\u00eda del Duc:<\/strong> also known as the&nbsp;<strong>Alquer\u00eda de Don Alonso<\/strong>,&nbsp;is a fortified farmhouse converted, in its time, into a stately leisure and hunting estate.<\/li><li><strong>The Pine Tower (Torre\u00f3n del pino)<\/strong>, from the sixteenth century, formed part of the wall expansion carried out by&nbsp;Francis Borgia<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Alfahuir\"><\/span>Alfahuir<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/hotelborgia.com\/blog\/sant-jeroni-cotalba-monastery-visit\/\" title=\"The Monastery of Sant Jeroni de Cotalba\"><strong>The Monastery of Sant Jeroni de Cotalba<\/strong><\/a>, founded in&nbsp;1388&nbsp;and located 8 kilometres from Gandia, enjoyed the protection of the Borgia family. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Simat_de_Valldigna\"><\/span>Simat de Valldigna<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hotelborgia.com\/blog\/valldigna-monastery-history-visit\/\" title=\"Monastery of Santa Mar\u00eda de la Valldigna\">The Monastery of Santa Mar\u00eda de la Valldigna<\/a><\/strong>:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hotelborgia.com\/blog\/pope-alexander-vi-borgia\/\" title=\"Alexander VI, the Borgia pope\">Rodrigo de Borja<\/a>&nbsp;and his son Cesare were abbots of this conventual building.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Albaida\"><\/span>Albaida<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The&nbsp;Castle-Palace of the Mil\u00e1n de Arag\u00f3n<\/strong>: Cardinal&nbsp;Luis de Mil\u00e1 y de Borja, nephew of Pope&nbsp;Calixtus III, built this palace-fortress in the centre of the municipality.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Castellon_de_Rugat\"><\/span>Castell\u00f3n de Rugat<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Ducal Palace: <\/strong>some remains are preserved of a palace used by the Dukes of Gandia as a summer and leisure residence.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Canals\"><\/span>Canals<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Canals Tower:<\/strong> according to tradition, this is where&nbsp;Alfonso de Borja, the future Pope&nbsp;Calixtus III, was born.<\/li><li><strong>The&nbsp;Borgia Oratory:<\/strong> preserves a medieval panel painting depicting the Last Judgment.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Xativa\"><\/span>X\u00e1tiva<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The&nbsp;Collegiate Church of X\u00e1tiva:&nbsp;<\/strong> Burial site of several family members; in its museum, you can admire works of art belonging to the Borgias.<\/li><li><strong>The birthplace of Alexander VI:<\/strong>&nbsp;is preserved in the square that bears his name.<\/li><li><strong>Church of San Pedro:&nbsp;<\/strong>where the future Pope&nbsp;Alexander VI&nbsp;was baptised in the year&nbsp;1431.<\/li><li><strong>The&nbsp;Hermitage of Santa Ana<\/strong>: Saint Anne was the patron saint of the Borgia family.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Llombay\"><\/span>Llombay<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The&nbsp;Church of the Holy Cross:<\/strong>&nbsp;forms part of the former Dominican convent. This convent was a donation from Saint&nbsp;Francis Borgia, first&nbsp;Marquess of Llombay.  The annual&nbsp;<em>Borgia Market<\/em>&nbsp;takes place in Llombay.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Valencia\"><\/span>Valencia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Valencia Cathedral:<\/strong>&nbsp;Alfonso de Borja&nbsp;ordered the construction of the Chapel of Saint Peter.&nbsp;Rodrigo de Borja, before being proclaimed pope, commissioned an Italian painter to create&nbsp;the frescoes for the dome. In the chapel dedicated to&nbsp;Saint Francis Borgia,&nbsp;there are two canvases by Goya&nbsp;dedicated to the saint.<\/li><li><strong>The&nbsp;Borgia Palace:<\/strong> located just a few metres from the cathedral, it was erected by the first Duke of Gandia and son of Alexander VI,&nbsp;Pedro Luis de Borja. It is currently the seat of the&nbsp;Valencian Parliament.<\/li><li><strong>The&nbsp;University of Valencia<\/strong>:  It was founded in&nbsp;1500&nbsp;thanks to the papal bull of Pope&nbsp;Alexander VI.
