The range of grades allows you to find beginner routes as well as demanding lines, although the grade alone is not enough to make a good choice: the length, the first bolt, the belay station setup and the condition of each route can vary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its main <strong>south and south-west<\/strong> orientation explains much of its popularity during the cooler months. In winter it gets many hours of sunshine; in summer that same advantage turns into a risk of heat and sun exposure. The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/clubalpigandia.com\/\">Club Alp\u00ed Gandia<\/a><\/strong>, founded in 1983 with climbing as its founding activity, has maintained a close link with the crag through training, equipment maintenance and sporting events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of its highlights is the <strong>Marxuquera Climbing Rally<\/strong>, a team competition that covers selected routes across various sectors. More than just a leaderboard, the rally reflects the continuity of a local sports culture based on knowing the cliff, taking care of gear and sharing the activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Access faced a delicate moment in 2022 when passage through private agricultural plots was closed. In 2023, Gandia City Council acquired around 20,000 square metres of Penya Roja to secure public access and establish the site as an active tourism destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"clear:both\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_check_before_climbing\"><\/span>What to check before climbing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The existence of accessible grades does not mean an inexperienced climber should start unassisted. On real rock, you must master tying in, belaying, clipping quickdraws and lowering off. To learn, the safest approach is to go with a club, a qualified guide or an experienced climber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Up-to-date topo map:<\/strong> check the sector, grade, length, number of quickdraws and belay station type.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Suitable rope:<\/strong> it must be long enough for your chosen route; always tie a knot in the free end.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Certified gear:<\/strong> helmet, harness, belay device, locking carabiner, quickdraws and climbing shoes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Buddy check:<\/strong> inspect the knot, harness, carabiner lock and belay device setup before taking your feet off the ground.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Heat and exposure:<\/strong> bring water, sun protection and avoid hours that are incompatible with the south-facing cliff.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.femecv.com\/seguridad-en-escalada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>FEMECV provides climbing safety resources<\/strong><\/a> on tying in, belaying, the first few metres, quickdraws and lowering-off manoeuvres. To locate the final turn-off, the approach path and designated parking area, use up-to-date local information and respect all signage. Do not block farm tracks, property entrances or tractor access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cliff face shares its surroundings with orange groves and active farmland. Sticking to established footpaths, staying out of crops, refraining from picking fruit and taking all rubbish home with you are essential to ensure climbing access remains compatible with local rural life in Marxuquera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"clear:both\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Marxuquera_beyond_the_crag\"><\/span>Marxuquera beyond the crag<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The terrain around Penya Roja also shelters protected archaeological rock shelters. These are not extensions of the climbing crag nor areas to explore off-trail.
