His father, the poet <strong>Pere March<\/strong>, was steward and procurator general to <strong>Alfons el Vell<\/strong>, the first royal Duke of Gandia, and young Ausi\u00e0s trained as a knight at the ducal court \u2014 the same court evoked today by the <a href=\"https:\/\/hotelborgia.com\/blog\/ducal-palace-borgia-gandia-history-visit\/\"><strong>Palau Ducal<\/strong><\/a>. As for his birth, around <strong>1397\u20131400<\/strong>, the documents leave the question open: tradition places it in Gandia or Beniarj\u00f3, though recent research points to the city of Valencia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knighted in <strong>1419<\/strong>, he fought between <strong>1420 and 1424<\/strong> in the Mediterranean campaigns of <strong>Alfonso the Magnanimous<\/strong> \u2014 Sardinia, Corsica, Sicily and the siege of the island of Djerba. In <strong>1425<\/strong> the king appointed him <strong>royal falconer<\/strong> of the Kingdom of Valencia, a post he held until 1430, overseeing the royal falconry on the Albufera. He then hung up his arms and returned to his estates, a stone\u2019s throw from Gandia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_lord_of_Beniarjo_and_the_sugar_of_the_Serpis\"><\/span>The lord of Beniarj\u00f3 and the sugar of the Serpis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">March held seigneurial jurisdiction over <strong>Beniarj\u00f3<\/strong> and the hamlets of <strong>Pardines<\/strong> and <strong>Vernissa<\/strong>. Far from merely collecting rents, he promoted the growing of <strong>sugar cane<\/strong>, set up a sugar mill \u2014 the <em>trapig<\/em> \u2014 and had a weir built on the river Serpis, together with the irrigation channel that still bears his name, the <strong>S\u00e9quia de March<\/strong> or S\u00e9quia Mare. The most tormented poet of his century was also a country lord with his feet in the mud of the huerta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Two_marriages_and_a_brother-in-law_called_Joanot_Martorell\"><\/span>Two marriages and a brother-in-law called Joanot Martorell<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February <strong>1439<\/strong> he married <strong>Isabel Martorell<\/strong>, sister of <strong>Joanot Martorell<\/strong>, the author of <em>Tirant lo Blanch<\/em>. The wedding came after two years of lawsuits with the bride\u2019s family over the dowry, complete with letters of battle and threats of a knightly duel. Isabel died only a few months later, in September of that same year; forensic studies carried out after the discovery of the family crypt revealed that she was pregnant. In <strong>1443<\/strong> March married his second wife, <strong>Joana Escorna<\/strong>, who died in 1454 leaving him as her heir. He had no legitimate children from either marriage, though at least five were born outside them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His father and both his wives rest in the <strong>March family crypt<\/strong> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/hotelborgia.com\/blog\/sant-jeroni-cotalba-monastery-visit\/\"><strong>monastery of Sant Jeroni de Cotalba<\/strong><\/a>, rediscovered in <strong>2016<\/strong> beneath the chapel of the Virgen del Rosario. The poet dictated his will in October 1458 and died on <strong>3 March 1459<\/strong> at his house in Cabillers street, Valencia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_work_128_poems_that_changed_poetry\"><\/span>The work: 128 poems that changed poetry<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His surviving work amounts to <strong>128 poems<\/strong> and more than ten thousand lines, traditionally grouped into <strong>songs of love<\/strong>, <strong>songs of death<\/strong>, <strong>moral songs<\/strong> and the <strong>Cant espiritual<\/strong>. March was the first poet in the Iberian Peninsula to write learned verse entirely in Valencian, free of the formulas of troubadour Occitan, and he replaced the ideal of courtly love with something far more modern: introspection, doubt and the conflict between flesh and spirit. From time to come no good can reach me;<\/em><br><em>what is nothing is, for me, the best. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-extra-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Beyond all measure I love the past,<\/em><br><em>which is to love nothing, for it is gone;<\/em><br><em>in this thought I dwell and take delight,<\/em><br><em>but when I lose it my pain grows stronger,<\/em><br><em>like the man condemned to death, who has long known it and takes comfort, and, made to believe he will be spared,<\/em><br><em>is led to die without a moment\u2019s warning.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"From_Garcilaso_to_today_his_influence\"><\/span>From Garcilaso to today: his influence<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">March was essential reading for the Castilian Renaissance: he influenced <strong>Juan Bosc\u00e1n<\/strong>, <strong>Garcilaso de la Vega<\/strong>, Diego Hurtado de Mendoza and Fernando de Herrera, and his verses soon circulated in Spanish thanks to the printed translations of Baltasar de Roman\u00ed (<strong>1539<\/strong>) and Jorge de Montemayor (<strong>1560<\/strong>). Six centuries on, he remains the greatest classic of literature in Valencian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"In_the_footsteps_of_Ausias_March_from_Gandia\"><\/span>In the footsteps of Ausi\u00e0s March from Gandia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"In_Gandia\"><\/span>In Gandia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city honours the poet with his monument near the Centre Hist\u00f2ric and with the <strong>Parque Ausi\u00e0s March<\/strong>, the large green space on the banks of the Serpis. Every year the town council also awards the <strong>Premi Ausi\u00e0s March de Poesia<\/strong> as part of the Premis Literaris Ciutat de Gandia, one of the longest-running and most prestigious poetry prizes in the Valencian language; the dates of each edition vary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"In_Beniarjo_his_lordship\"><\/span>In Beniarj\u00f3, his lordship<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some <strong>5 km<\/strong> from Gandia, Beniarj\u00f3 preserves the layout of the old <strong>March manor house<\/strong> next to the church of San Juan Bautista, the <strong>S\u00e9quia de March<\/strong> and a signposted route through the water heritage of the old lordship. During its patron saint festivities the village also awards the <a href=\"https:\/\/senyoriudausiasmarch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Premi de Poesia Senyoriu d\u2019Ausi\u00e0s March<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sant_Jeroni_de_Cotalba_and_Valencia\"><\/span>Sant Jeroni de Cotalba and Valencia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the monastery of Sant Jeroni de Cotalba, <strong>8 km<\/strong> from Gandia in Alfauir, the guided tour takes in the monument where the poet\u2019s family rests; check current opening times and tickets at <a href=\"https:\/\/cotalba.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cotalba.es<\/a>.
