{"id":4160,"date":"2026-09-29T10:39:24","date_gmt":"2026-09-29T08:39:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotelborgia.com\/blog\/?p=4160"},"modified":"2026-09-29T11:27:11","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T09:27:11","slug":"any-jaume-i-gandia-750-years-talks-tours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotelborgia.com\/blog\/any-jaume-i-gandia-750-years-talks-tours\/","title":{"rendered":"Any Jaume I in Gandia, a month of talks and tours marking 750 years since the king&#8217;s death"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From <strong>7 to 30 October 2026<\/strong>, Gandia devotes an entire month to <strong>King Jaume I<\/strong> to mark the <strong>750th anniversary of his death<\/strong>: talks, an archaeological display, two guided tours and a show of medieval poetry and music, spread across the <strong>Palau Ducal<\/strong>, the <strong>Museu Arqueol\u00f2gic<\/strong>, the <strong>Universitat de Val\u00e8ncia&#8217;s Gandia centre<\/strong> and <strong>Bair\u00e9n Castle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme goes by the name <strong>Any Jaume I a Gandia<\/strong> and the motto <em>750 anys construint la nostra hist\u00f2ria<\/em> (750 years building our history). It forms part of the commemoration declared by the Valencian regional government, the Generalitat Valenciana, for the whole of 2026, the year that marks seven and a half centuries since the death of the monarch, who died on <strong>27 July 1276<\/strong>. In Gandia it is organised by the City Council, the <strong>CEIC Alfons el Vell<\/strong> and the <strong>Centre Internacional de Gandia of the Universitat de Val\u00e8ncia<\/strong>, with the support of other institutions and cultural organisations in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme reaches well beyond the king&#8217;s biography. It looks at the 13th century as a whole: how the territory was organised after the conquest, who lived in the Bair\u00e9n valley before and after the arrival of the new settlers, what role women played in medieval society and what legacy the Muslim scholars of La Safor left behind. Around <strong>1239-1240<\/strong>, the castle surrendered on agreed terms to the troops of Jaume I, and records already place several of the monarch&#8217;s land grants within its district in <strong>1240<\/strong>, followed by further measures to organise the territory now occupied by Gandia and its surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the surrender, the population gradually moved from the hill down to the farmstead on the plain, the seed of the medieval town that would eventually shape today&#8217;s Gandia town centre. The October programme returns to the subject from several angles: the archaeology of the valley, the founding of the city and the lives of those who settled it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Opening_at_the_Palau_Ducal_with_Poemes_de_la_Mitja_Lluna\"><\/span>Opening at the Palau Ducal with Poemes de la Mitja Lluna<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme opens on <strong>Wednesday 7 October at 20:00<\/strong> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/hotelborgia.com\/blog\/ducal-palace-borgia-gandia-history-visit\/\"><strong>Palau Ducal dels Borja<\/strong><\/a>. After the official opening ceremony, the stage is given over to <strong><em>Poemes de la Mitja Lluna<\/em><\/strong> (Poems of the Half Moon), a poetry and music show that explores Andalusi poetry and the Muslim cultural legacy, a fitting starting point for a programme that looks at both sides of the conquest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On stage will be <strong>Jota Mart\u00ednez<\/strong>, a specialist in medieval music and in the recovery of historical instruments; the poet and reciter <strong>Joan Femenia<\/strong>; and the teacher and reciter <strong>S\u00edlvia T\u00e0pia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Bairen_valley_at_the_Museu_Arqueologic\"><\/span>The Bair\u00e9n valley at the Museu Arqueol\u00f2gic<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On <strong>Thursday 8 October<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/hotelborgia.com\/blog\/gandia-archaeological-museum-maga\/\"><strong>Museu Arqueol\u00f2gic de Gandia (MAGa)<\/strong><\/a> opens at <strong>19:00<\/strong> a <strong>display of 13th-century archaeological finds<\/strong> from the Bair\u00e9n valley. These objects, recovered in the valley, offer a glimpse into the daily life of medieval society through its material remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, at <strong>19:30<\/strong>, archaeologist <strong>Joan Negre<\/strong>, of the School of Arabic Studies (EEA-CSIC), gives the talk <em>La vall de Bair\u00e9n a les vespres de la conquesta feudal<\/em> (The Bair\u00e9n valley on the eve of the feudal conquest), focusing on what the valley was like just before the arrival of Jaume I. The MAGa also hosts the two sessions that close the programme at the end of the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Talks_at_the_Universitat_de_Valencia_centre\"><\/span>Talks at the Universitat de Val\u00e8ncia centre<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the programme takes place at the <strong>Seu de la UV a Gandia<\/strong>, always at <strong>19:30<\/strong>. La colonitzaci\u00f3 feudal en clau femenina<\/em> (the women of 13th-century Gandia and feudal settlement from a female perspective), with <strong>Marina Blasco<\/strong> (Universitat de Val\u00e8ncia).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Friday 23 October<\/strong>: <em>Jaume I: el retrat d&#8217;un rei<\/em> (portrait of a king), with <strong>Ferran Garcia-Oliver<\/strong> (Universitat de Val\u00e8ncia).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tuesday 27 October<\/strong>: <em>La urg\u00e8ncia de recuperar el dret civil valenci\u00e0<\/em> (the urgent need to restore Valencian civil law), with <strong>Vicent Mi\u00f1ana Llorens<\/strong>, director of the SCEJ at Gandia&#8217;s Court of First Instance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two talks devoted to women are one of the highlights of the programme: the first deals with the women who shaped the king&#8217;s life, between affection and politics; the second moves to the local scale and looks at the feudal settlement of Gandia through women&#8217;s experience. The talk on the 16th, whose Latin title refers to the act of building and planting, tackles head-on the city&#8217;s origins as a royal foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Two_guided_tours_of_medieval_Gandia\"><\/span>Two guided tours of medieval Gandia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the two middle Saturdays of the month the programme heads outdoors, both times at <strong>11:00<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Saturday 17 October<\/strong>: <strong>guided tour of Gandia<\/strong>, starting from the <strong>Pla\u00e7a de les Escoles Pies<\/strong> and led by official guide <strong>Alicia Vendrell Bet\u00ed<\/strong>. The route focuses on the Gandia of its founding years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Saturday 24 October<\/strong>: <strong>guided tour of Bair\u00e9n Castle<\/strong>, meeting at the <strong>foot of the castle<\/strong>, led by <strong>Joan Negre<\/strong>, the same archaeologist who opens the programme at the MAGa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the climb up to Bair\u00e9n, comfortable footwear and water are a good idea: the castle sits on top of a hill, and the views over La Safor and the sea make the effort worthwhile. If you fancy it, you can also walk up to the castle on your own another day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Closing_at_the_MAGa_with_Andalusi_La_Safor_and_the_king\"><\/span>Closing at the MAGa with Andalusi La Safor and the king<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final week returns to the <strong>Museu Arqueol\u00f2gic<\/strong>, again at <strong>19:30<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Thursday 29 October<\/strong>: <em>La saviesa oblidada: intel\u00b7lectuals musulmans de la Safor (segles XI-XIII)<\/em> (forgotten wisdom: Muslim scholars of La Safor, 11th-13th centuries), with <strong>V. C. Navarro Oltra<\/strong>, of the Ibn Tufayl Foundation for Arabic Studies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Friday 30 October<\/strong>: <em>Jaume I: vida i regnat del forjador del Pa\u00eds Valenci\u00e0<\/em> (life and reign of the forger of the Valencian lands), with medievalist <strong>David Garrido Valls<\/strong>, who brings the programme to a close.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The penultimate session brings back the scholars and men of letters who lived in the area in the Andalusi period, a part of local history less familiar to the general public. The closing talk, by contrast, returns to the figure of the monarch to offer an overview of his life and reign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_programme_for_schools_and_families_too\"><\/span>A programme for schools and families too<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alongside the activities open to the public, the City Council has prepared <strong>specific teaching materials for schools<\/strong>, adapted to different ages and accompanied by educational activities, literary routes and proposals to bring history closer to younger children.
