Bairén Castle in Gandia: history, visits and views

Located between the city and Gandia beach, the fortress of Bairén or Bayren (also known as San Juan Castle) is the most important monument from Gandia’s Andalusi past, the territory’s first capital and the origin of the founding of the town.

The castle

The archaeological park where the castle stands covers nine hectares, extending from the foot of the hill occupied by the ancient medina of Al-Bayren.

Although the fortress lies in ruins, work has been carried out to improve the site and it has been adapted for tourist visits. The wall facing the sea has also been restored. From here there is a sweeping panorama of Gandia beach and the Mediterranean Sea, with excellent views stretching from Cullera to Montgó.

The fortress is divided into the alcazaba and the albacara, the original core of the settlement, and the village or medina. The site also includes the access route, several viewpoints, walls and outer defensive walls.

History

The earliest records of the building date from the 11th century, when battles were already taking place between Christians and Almoravids. Earlier settlements are nevertheless believed to have existed here, and it may have been a Roman fortification. In 1097, a battle took place at the castle between the Almoravids and El Cid.

During the Christian period, the fortress remained in use through the Mudejar uprisings of the 13th century and the War of the Two Peters. Afterwards, the castle lost its military role and served as a hermitage and shelter for pilgrims until the end of the 18th century.

Visits

The archaeological park can be visited independently on any day, although Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 to 12:00 are recommended, or on any weekday with advance booking.
